Our five-day summer institute offers teachers, coaches, administrators, policymakers, professors, teacher educators, and anyone with an interest in K-12 mathematics teaching methods the opportunity to observe, analyze and participate in the teaching of a group of 24 students who will enter 5th grade in the New York City public schools this fall.

Each day at Math Lab involves a pre-brief about the day's lessons, two hours of observing lessons taught by Math Lab facilitators, time to debrief, and study of student work.  Towards the end of the week, participants also have the opportunity to work one-on-one with students to try out the teaching practices we study together in the Lab.  Afternoon sessions offer the opportunity to study the progression of fractions standards and related student understandings required by the Common Core, and to discuss implications of our work at Math Lab and plan for the upcoming school year.
